T-Mobile’s solution to capacity issues (eg: too many people placing heavy demands on the network)? Free femtocell coverage aka “Uncarrier 7.0”. Recently, T-Mobile has been receiving a deluge of customer complaints, particularly regarding in-building (indoor) service. Without the low frequency spectrun that other wireless providers have, T-Mobile’s indoor network is at a disadvantage. To compensate, its offering femtocells coverage to its user-base (free Wi-Fi calling). During the past year or so, John Legere, CEO of T-Mobile has been exceptionally successful at adding subscribers to the network, yet deployment hasn’t kept pace, resulting in overall performance gaps. To put a fine point on this – out of the 1,000+ client leads Steel in the Air has had this year from landowners who’ve received inquiries from wireless carriers regarding new site builds, only a handful have been from T-Mobile. This doesn’t necessarily mean that T-Mobile cell sites will be decommissioned; it just means that Wi-Fi offloading will be an even more prominent player in the T-Mobile network as opposed to AT&T and Verizon.
