The carriers will lease land for a tower but typically when the area is very rural they just don't feel that it is worth covering. The other issue is that when the terrain is hilly or mountainous, they might have decent coverage in the area but just not at your location. In this situation, they won't build more towers.

I have been with Verizon Wireless for several years. When I first started my home location was Chattanooga, TN. Now I have moved to a rural mountian home and my reception is so bad I have been thinking about just cutting it off. Why pay so much for something that is almost useless.
I remember a friend telling me some time ago that Cell comps. would lease land for a tower. I would like to know more about this.
Thanks,
Gwen

We just last week heard an unsubstantiated rumor that T-Mobile is moving forward on some leases, but you are the first person that has actually indicated to us that T-Mobile has signed a lease since the article was written. It is possible that they are signing leases that they had negotiated previously but not actually building the sites at this time. An associate who used to work for T-Mobile in Florida told us today that T-Mobile let go most of their vendors and he isn't aware of anything that is in construction. I don't know if this is representative of just Florida or for the entire nation. Where are your leases?

We do know that some of our clients have been approached in the last week for modifications to their exisitng leases with T-Mobile to add antennas for UMTS.

Just curious if you know whether or not T-mobile is stil moving forward with signing new leases and going through the permit/zoning process on schedule or if your announcement means that all plans are expected to remain on hold until further notice?

We just had 9 leases signed in July, 2011, so I don't think this article is relevant any longer.

The percentages can be a bit deceiving in that American Tower and Crown Castle have 2-3 times more towers in the US than SBA. AMT is better situated from a risk standpoint because they have diversified more effectively than CCI and SBA to other countries. So the percentage of net revenue attributed to AT&T and T-Mobile should be less.

There are two ways that this is a negative:

1. First, the tower companies will have some lease terminations over the next few years. It might take more than a year for the terminations to commence due to the need to migrate custemers from T-Mobile to AT&T systems.
2. Secondly, not only will you reduce the number of new cell sites needed by T-Mobile, but AT&T will also need to build fewer sites instead focusing only in areas where there aren't existing T-Mobile or AT&T sites.

All in all, this isn't good for the tower industry.
